Port of Emmastad (ISLA Refinery)
General: The quality of the harbor, the strategic location of Curacao and the safe political status of the island also lured SHELL to establish an oil refinery and transshipment plant in the harbor in 1916. Nowadays, the refinery is leased to the Venezuelan oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), operating under the name of Refineria Isla (Curazao) S.A.
All Isla piers are modernly equipped to handle oil in bulk safely and speedily, in order to make the turn around of the vessel as short as possible. Sufficient hose connections are installed to load or discharge oil, slops, water ballast or residue and to supply steam.
At the refinery, ex-pipe bunkering facilities are available at eight of the ten jetties. Tankers working cargo can bunker concurrent cargo operations within the sheltered refinery area. Vessels calling for bunkers only can also be accommodated at the refinery on special request. Available grades are marine diesel oil, intermediate fuels as well as marine fuel oil. Marine gasoil and low vanadium fuel are delivered by barge. The refinery can accommodate tankers of up to 100.000 dwt and the max draft is 12.80 meters.
Maximum size: The Isla Refinery can accommodate tankers of up to 100,000 dwt with a max. draft of 12,8m. At the refinery are available 10 jetties of which 9 are for tankers calling to load and/or discharge, etc. Bunkers can also be supplied at the refinery and Fresh water only by barge. One jetty is available for tank cleaning, small repairs, but only for cold-work.
